Reasons to Love your Library #2: People

by Jo Harcus on 9 February 2016

Taking a selfieToday we’re celebrating the people who work in libraries and the people who use them with our Love your Library week shelfie and book spine poetry prize draw. Enter now to win a handy wooden bookrest. To enter, tweet your photos using #LuvLucyLibrary or email them to us to post via @LucyCavLib. Entries must reach us by Sunday 14 February. Your names will be put into a hat and we’ll draw and announce the winner on Monday. Good luck!

Ask most librarians why they chose to work in libraries and most (including us!) would say it’s because they love helping people rather than because they love books (although we’re quite fond of them too!). So it always surprises us when people apologise for interrupting us or hesitate to ask us for help – that’s what we’re here for! At today’s Library and Information Helpdesk we’ll be focusing on revision tips and online tools but if you’ve got any library or basic IT questions come along, ask us and make our day!

Our friendly IT Team are also on hand in the Library to help with your techy questions. Join Scarlet in the foyer at 11 am today for a refresher on all you ever wanted to know about printing, photocopying and scanning.

There are over 100 libraries in Cambridge full of people waiting to help you so whichever library you choose to work in make the most of your helpful library folk!  Not sure where to go or who to ask? The Cambridge Libraries Directory lists the names of staff and contact details for each library.

As we touched on yesterday, libraries aren’t just places to find books (and the many other resources that we have on offer, as you’ll see later in the week!). They’re also places to bring people together to share ideas, collaborate and learn from each other.

Book our new Group Study Room (lower ground floor) to work together, for meetings, reading groups, focus groups, etc. The College Library is for members of college only but during staffed hours (9:30 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday) the Group Study Room can now be booked to work with friends who aren’t members of Lucy Cavendish College. See our Access Policy for further details.

You can also join us for Elevenses in the Library today at 3pm, and every Thursday at 11 am, to meet and chat with other members of college over a free hot drink and biscuits. This week, we’re also offering a slice of our special Love your Library cake (yummy!). During Easter Term we also offer Extra Elevenses every Tuesday at 3 pm to encourage you to take a break from revising and writing up and relax with friends. Pop along and say hello.

We look forward to seeing your shelfies and reading your book spine poems. Visit again tomorrow to find out what reasons to Love your Library #3 will be!
