A Collage of a College Celebrating 50 Years Transforming Women’s Futures

29 April 2015

Lucy Cavendish College, the only women's college in the country exclusively for students aged 21 or over, and part of the University of Cambridge, has become the first Cambridge college to commission a collage of its iconic buildings and grounds. A Collage of a College, by Cambridge-based artist Emma Bennett was commissioned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lucy CavendishCollege Collage College. The Collage is made entirely from recycled paper, with each piece hand-ripped or cut to form a small part of the complete collage.

The collage depicts some of the College’s iconic buildings set amongst the tranquil surroundings of the College gardens. It also incorporates some hidden gems including a Nautilus Shell from the College Shield of Arms, and an unusual bench donated by the family of founding Fellow Dr Anna Bidder.

Christine Houghton, Domestic Bursar at Lucy Cavendish, pictured below receiving the collage alongside Head Porter John Morely and artist Emma Bennett said: “The collage shows many of our buildings, highlighting the rapid growth of the College during its first 50 years. An image of our College created out of so many separate pieces helps us remember the significant role many individuals have played during our first 50 years. From founding Fellows, visionary Presidents and generous supporters, through to inspiring staff and students – the College we enjoy today is a culmination of the efforts of many".

Many of her designs have been used to produce a range of prints, stationery, textiles and home wares, all environmentally friendly and UK produced. Emma describes her latest work: “I was absolutely thrilled to be asked by Lucy Cavendish College to create an iconic art piece to help them celebrate such an important anniversary year. The campus is a green oasis of peace in the city and was inspiring to my creative fingers!”

The collage will find a permanent home in the College’s newest development in Histon Road. Opened earlier this year, the new Student Centre provides 56 ensuite study bedrooms, a social area with an outdoor space and eight flats for students with families – all set within secure private gardens, ten minute’s walk from the main College site. Small prints of the collage will be available for purchase from the College Porter’s Lodge for £5.00 each.
