Lucy Cavendish College takes the biscuit by supporting Cambridge mum’s biscuit bakery

10 April 2014

Lucy Cavendish College, part of the University of Cambridge, and the only women's college in Europe exclusively for students aged twenty-one and over is delighted to launch the very first College biscuits in conjunction with fledgling business ‘Cambridge Street Bakes’.The new biscuits in the Porter's Lodge

The mouth-watering iced biscuits are handmade, unique to the College and on sale to the general public as well as the College community.

Of the ‘biscuit initiative’ Senior Porter John Morley, says: “We are delighted to be the very first Cambridge college to be selling bespoke, handmade biscuits by Cambridge Street Bakes. Not only are they delicious and make a lovely gift - especially for Easter, but it is only right that as a women’s college we support two Cambridge mums who are starting up a new business in the city. “

The range of biscuits has been launched with a Lucy Bear biscuit in a presentation tin and crested biscuit pops which are bang on trend and a sweet treat for any occasion. The items are now on sale in the College’s Porter’s Lodge but there are plans for the range to be sold online in the very near future and ideas for selection tins and seasonal products are already in the pipeline – watch this space!

Cambridge Street Bakes also make their own range of products and gifts and have been busy going to local fairs to launch their business.  Their first major outing was at the Mill Road Street Fair, where the reactions of the public were overwhelming. A selection of iced Street signs, chocolate snowflakes, swirly lollipop biscuits, jars with Australian style biscoHead Porter John Morley with students and Cambridge Street Bakestti, Dutch style gingerbread and an array of flavoured shortbreads hit the spot with the Cambridge audience. Of the partnership Jeanette Havinga, co-founder of Cambridge Street Bakes says:

“We have enjoyed working alongside Lucy Cavendish College to create this unique selection of biscuits. We see a successful future ahead alongside the College to take our business to Lucy Bear and Lucy Lollypopthe next level.”

Currently baking in their home kitchens the dream for the future is to move into rented premises. Cambridge Street Bakes will be at the EAT Cambridge Food and Drink Festival in May with lots of new and exciting biscuits and ofcourse there will be some special cycling biscuits for the Tour de France. With a visually pleasing web site in the pipeline and active use of social media the Cambridge Street Bakes Team are hoping to reach an even wider public in 2014.

Notes to Editors: Lucy Cavendish is the only women's college in the country exclusively for students aged 21 or over, and a unique part of the University of Cambridge. Its undergraduates and postgraduates come from over sixty countries, and a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Many have changed careers or overcome significant challenges in order to reach University. The College is particularly strong in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Law, Psychology, the Social Sciences and English. Our President, Professor Janet Todd OBE, is an internationally-renowned scholar of early women writers and author of many biographies and critical works.

Cambridge StreCambridge Street Bakes logoet Bakes was founded in October 2013 by two Cambridge mums. Kate Sharkie is originally from Australia and Jeanette Havinga moved over to Cambridge from the Netherlands. Both have lived in Cambridge for about a decade. Not only finding it hard to combine family life and children without a family network nearby, but also realising the importance of being able to support and help out at the children’s school, they were looking for a more flexible way of working.  After a very successful charity bake sale, where their iced biscuits were particularly popular the idea of starting a biscuit bakery was born.
