Mathematics
The Cambridge Mathematical Tripos is the oldest and most famous mathematics examination in the world, and has been successful in producing some of the leading mathematicians of the age, both pure and applied, throughout history. It also provides an excellent training for those who wish to use mathematics in a wide variety of careers. Because it is so intensive and fast-paced, this course requires a very high standard of competence and commitment. Many applicants may be competent but sometimes are unsure of commitment to mathematics. Mature students who have thought thoroughly about what they want from life, and who are aware of how studies relate concretely to careers, have a definite advantage of commitment.
Academic Requirements
The course presupposes knowledge of Mathematics to a high standard: either grade A in double Mathematics at A level, or grade A in single Mathematics at A level supported by some other Mathematical standard. Knowledge of Physics, especially mechanics, is also desirable, as is knowledge of Probability. Our students come from very diverse backgrounds and we usually ask for STEP which gives them the fairest chance in proving their ability, as well as being excellent preparation.
