Lucy Cavendish College Boat Club

Lucy Cavendish College is part of Cambridge’s only Combined Boat Club; Lucy Cavendish College/ Hughes Hall Boat Club. This combined formation benefits the Boat Club in two major ways; we are guaranteed enough rowers for a minimum of two competitive crews each academic year and it gives Lucy Cavendish students the opportunity to socialise with students from another mature student College in the University. Motivated on the water, motivated off the water...our Boat Club Mantra!

The Boat Club prides itself on its novicing system, which has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Our novicing programme begins in Michaelmas term each year. Novices who are introduced to the boat houses, rowing machines and basic terminology in October are already racing in mid-November with the help of our experienced coaching team and volunteers! In short, no experience needed to get involved! Moreover, in recent years the Boat Club has been earning quite a reputation in the Novices races. In 2010, for instance, Lucy/Hughes’s first novice boat came 3rd in the top division while the 2nd boat was runners up in the 2nd division at Emmanuel Sprints. One week later the second boat once again reached the finals of Clare Novices Regatta, which the club won in 2007. We have also finished in the top 10 of the Fairbairn’s Cup for the past two years, beating over 40 other crews to gain this position.

Crews for Bumps are selected after the Christmas Break. The 1st crew (W1) train on the water 4-5 times a week with 2 land sessions while the 2nd crew (W2) train 2-3 times a week with two land sessions. A third crew (W3) rows at weekends to keep fit. The Club has been incredibly successful in recent years in Bumps. In 2010, having rowed 7 races over 4 days, the W1 finally broke into the 2nd division of bumps by dramatically bumping Corpus Christi on the reach on the last day of Bumps. The Club won blades in May Bumps in 2009, 2008, 2007, and 2005 and were crucial to Hughes Hall winning the Pegasus cup in 2009 and 2007. We got through the trail stage at Henley Womens' regatta in 2008 and also came in the top half of WEHORR 2009.

The Lucy boat, Lady Charlotte, is currently racked in St. Catharine's College Boat Club where we also have the use of ergometer (indoor rowing) machines. Lady Charlotte was generously bought for the boat club by Dame Veronica Sutherland and Dr. Lindsay Traub.
