Reasons to Love your Library #1: Space

by Jo Harcus on 8 February 2016

Floating in spaceThis week, to celebrate National Libraries Day and Valentine’s Day, we’re offering 5 days of activities to highlight 5 ways we can help you make the most of your College Library.  Each day we’ll be blogging about a different reason to Love your Library and we’ll be tweeting updates and snapshots of the week too using #LuvLucyLib.

Today we’re focusing on space.  Whether you like to work in silence or with background noise, alone or in a group, with a view or without distractions the Library has a spot to suit you!  Our reading rooms offer a variety of individual study spaces (first and second floors) or larger shared desks (ground floor) for those of you who like to spread out.  Don’t forget, you can now enjoy covered drinks in the reading rooms too.

To encourage you to explore the variety of other spaces available, we’re running different activities in different areas of the Library throughout the week.

Head up to the Kwi Ok Yeu Room (at the top of the Library), curl up on a sofa and enjoy a blind date with a book from the Scribbling Women Collection or sit back and enjoy the stunning view of the College grounds.

Pop into the Sally Rodwell Room (first floor) and say hello to the IT Team in their new home.

Feeling stressed?  Got brain ache? Relax and get creative in the comfy area in the basement (down the stairs, on the right) by colouring in a classic book cover design or designing a bookmark to win a College branded water bottle.  While you’re there check out our shiny new group study room.

The foyer is a social space to take a break, have a snack and enjoy a drink from our vending machine.  Why not join us for Elevenses on Thursdays at 11:00am and get to know other members of College over a free cuppa and biscuits.  As we’re celebrating we’ve ordered a special cake and are offering an extra helping of Elevenses on Tuesday at 3 pm.  In the foyer you’ll also find details of our Love your Library Week shelfie and book spine poetry competition (more on that tomorrow!) and the Feedback Wall will have a special love theme too – add your comments in the Library or online.

If you’d prefer a guided tour, need a refresher or missed inductions in Freshers’ Week, we’re offering mini library tours for current students during Love your Library Week.  Just drop in Monday at 2:30pm, Thursday at 11:30 am or Friday at 2pm.

We hope you’ll agree that the College Library offers a space to suit everyone but what happens when you’re off-site?  Try Spacefinder, a website which shows places to study close to where you are right now and allows you to search according to who you want to work with, atmosphere, noise levels and facilities.  As well as listing other libraries, it also includes more informal settings like cafés, bars and other public spaces.

Happy exploring and check back here tomorrow for reasons to Love your Library #2!
