Rugby women to run ‘the journey to Twickenham’ for charity

12 June 2018

Two Lucy Cavendish students, both former captains of the women’s Blues Team at Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club (CURUFC) Lara Gibson and Alice Middleton will participate in a six-hour relay through the streets of Cambridge this weekend to raise money for three different charities. CURUFC women’s club was recently named 'Ospreys Team of the Year' in recognition of an outstanding season. Alice was also awarded 'Osprey of the Year' for her performance as Captain in 2016 and as Full Back since.

The relay will take place on Saturday 16 June and will start at 10am on Kings Parade in Cambridge. As a team, the women aim to run ‘the journey to Twickenham’, which is 66 miles in total. Each person will run at least 10km. The team is raising funds online (link here), and will have charity collection buckets with them on the day.

CURUFC will split 50% of the money raised between two charities: Mind and Women in Sport.

The other 50% will go towards the building of a brand new gym and performance centre at the home of Light Blue rugby, Grange Road. The current facilities are not fit for purpose now that the club is growing and both men and women have intensive strength and conditioning programmes. The vision of the new gym is that it will be fundraised for by both men and women and therefore will be a fully co-owned space, which should set the culture of integration for future players coming through the club.

Lara Gibson, who currently plays Wing said:

“We have set an ambitious target of £16,000 as a team, so will be incredibly grateful for any donations, however small!”
