English undergraduate Bonnie Samuyiwa has been selected by Powerful Media to appear in its yearly Future Leaders magazine, as one of the UK's top 100 most outstanding undergraduates and recent graduates from an African/Afro-Caribbean background. She will also attend a Black History Month reception to mark the UN International Decade for people of African descent, which will be hosted by the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street next week.
The magazine Future Leaders celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and celebrated by inviting the 100 students to a launch party and award ceremony with guest speakers, skill-building workshops, a three-course lunch and an after-party. Sponsored by HSBC, the event also marked the debut of the Future Leaders Careers Fair, showcasing some of the world’s top companies in the world of banking, engineering, law and media.
To enter the competition, Bonnie - who is in her second year at Lucy Cavendish College - filled out a nomination form before receiving an invitation for an interview at Powerful Media's London office. All nominees for the award must achieve high grades for their academic work, in addition to doing something exceptional outside their studies. Bonnie is a Campus Ambassador for the Civil Service Fast Stream and is a Young Leader for the US Embassy in London. She is also a Youth Delegate for the Royal Commonwealth Society and a member of Young Professionals in Foreign Policy.
“I’m delighted to have my hard work recognised by Powerful Media, and it’s been amazing to meet like-minded black students achieving great things while at university. Being profiled as a Future Leader is a real honour, and I’m very much looking forward to attending the Black History Month Reception at 10 Downing Street.”
President of Lucy Cavendish College, Professor Madeleine Atkins said:
“Many congratulations to Bonnie for this exceptional achievement. She has worked incredibly hard, balancing her academic work with these leadership roles She is an outstanding example of our students who make a positive impact.”
